John

I remember traveling in China's Qinghai Province several years ago in the middle of winter. Looking down onto a small village made of packed mud, I was impressed by the way the architecture blended in with the environment, no doubt the result of generations of adaptation to the surroundings. How wise of these simple people. It was bitterly cold, even in my down jacket, but I knew it must be toasty warm inside those village houses. Nearby I met a young boy out collecting sticks to heat his home and commented, "Your houses are beautiful...and I'll bet they stay really warm in this cold weather." He responded, through chattering teeth (he was wearing a cotton shirt and thin jacket), "They're awful; I have to go out every day and collect wood, but there isn't much. I wish I had a jacket like yours." That was the last time I so romanticized poverty.

Great website. Will you be coming to Hong Kong?
